Wine Tours

Vineyards waiting to be explored

Central Europe holds many emerging—and stunningly beautiful—wine regions, as well as the world’s first delimited wine region, Tokaj. Wines from this part of the world are increasingly being recognized and discovered internationally, but you still won’t find many of the most interesting ones outside of the borders. You’ll have to come taste them from the source! We offer custom-planned private tours (from half-day to a week!), as well as daily small-group tours (maximum six participants) to Eger, Villány, Somló (and Northern Balaton), and Tokaj (on a rotating schedule). These trips depart from Budapest (after pick-up at your hotel in the morning). While the itineraries vary from day to day, they do always include visits and generous tastings at three wineries, a fabulous lunch (either homemade at a winery or at a winery-owned restaurant) which will introduce you to the local food of the region, and an all-around educational and fun day.

Spending a day touring the vineyards, meeting the region’s wine personalities, and tasting amazing wines is the best way to travel. Our tours usually include opportunities to meet the winemakers themselves, and we like to show a mix of the traditional, the experimental, and the modern to give you a complete picture of the state of the region’s wine. In some regions we can arrange a home-cooked lunch at a winery, elsewhere lunch is at a carefully-selected local restaurant where you can sample the regional food. Either way, many of our guests count their meals eaten on our tours among the highlights of their trip. The day will include time for a bit of sightseeing, as well as a vineyard walk to see firsthand where and how the grapes are grown. The final tasting of the day will be accompanied by a selection of cold local products such as artisanal cheese or cured meats. After all, tasting the local foods is essential to the experience of tasting the wine at its source! The great thing about Hungary’s compact size is that every part of the country can be visited on a day trip, and so can regions in Slovakia and Austria. By the end of the tour, you should feel like a specialist in the region you have visited. And you will have gained a wine experience to remember.

SPECIAL OFFER! We recommend pairing a small-group wine tour with our Danube Boat Ride & Wine Tasting. Book the two experiences together and receive a 10% discount on both (discount will be automatically applied during the booking process)!

Learn—Get acquainted with Central European wine culture from the source by seeing where it is made, and tasting and discussing it with those who make it. Learn about the history of the region’s wine and its current place in the context of the greater world of wine.
Experience—A day in the wine country will include tasting with the winemakers, visiting ancient cellars and traditional cellar rows, walking in the vineyards, tasting unique wines, and sampling authentic local food.
See—You’ll travel from Budapest to your chosen wine region and visit up to three wineries. Depending on the region, you can visit other sites such as castles, food artisans, museums, palaces, or thermal spas. In most cases winery tours will be done by the winemaker, and there will be a chance to take a walk in the vineyards.
Taste—Indigenous grape varieties abound in the region, and the full spectrum of reds, whites, rosés, sweet wines, and sparkling wines are produced. The unique terroirs produce wines with very different tastes and styles. See how local wine can still be. Lunch, paired with the local wines, will be a memorable part of the day.

Private and Small-Group Wine Tours are available year-round—rain, snow, or shine—except on some national holidays when the wineries are closed.
